Remembering Joan Bertani

Joan-Bertani

St. Mary’s Medical Center and Foundation lost a dedicated volunteer in the passing of Joan Marie Bertani, on September 8th, 2013. Joan was the current president of the St. Mary’s Auxiliary and member of the Foundation Board of Directors. She was well respected for her advocacy and gentle manner.

Joan was trained at St. Mary’s Medical Center as a lab technician in 1955. Years later in 1993 she returned as a volunteer and continued her service right up to last week accruing over 6,300 hours. For three decades Joan volunteered in a variety of departments including the ICU Waiting room, the Gift Shop, and the Auxiliary. Most recently Joan served as the Auxiliary president. In addition, as a member of the Foundation Board she was integral member of the committee supporting the new Cancer Center and most recently the Sister Diane Grassilli Center for Women’s Health.

She was an active member of St. Brendan Parish for over 50 years and willingly volunteered her time to help in the church community. She will be remembered as an enthusiastic competitor in tennis, bridge, and dominoes. She also enjoyed attending her children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events. She was their greatest (and most vocal) fan!

She will be greatly missed as a beloved member of St. Mary’s Medical Center. We are most grateful that the family has requested memorial gifts be sent to the hospital in lieu of flowers. This is just one more way Joan’s legacy of love and support for St. Mary’s continues to live on.
